the grin is already here. im so excited and nervous but she'll be rite Cheesy

thanks jim. the oil and coolant are fresh. i changed them in septemeber and its still nice and golden. ive only been starting her every few weeks and driving her up and down the driveway to keep her going since then. I think i'll have to replace the cam seals cause its pretty sticky all around the front and the timing belt looks sticky as well so i'll have to change that which will be fun. i'll post some pics later to show you what i mean. i know someone who knows what they are doing who can give me a hand. hes got a 3.0 12 v alfetta sedan and used to do sprints.

yep im a member of AROCA vic, i'll fill out those forms and send em off tomorrow. mat, my driving skills... LOL! you'll probably read in the papers the next day about the water police recovering a 75 from bass straight Grin it'll be fun though.

cheers paul. the name does ring a bell. is alan on these forums somewhere? im a laser sailor at the moment so i dont think i've met him.

more questions...

what sort of gear will i need, cams approved helmet, gloves etc???

the power steering feels a bit stiff. when you first start her up, its hard to turn left and once you get going it loosens up after a while. there are bubbles in the reservoir and you can see its been a problem child all its life, there's a trail of grim and oil down the side of the engine bay. should i be worried?

what sort of brake pads should i use to get started?

cheers
dean

cheers mat. yeh how good is no more school, waking up in the morning and not having to do anything Grin

I was thinking of entering phillip island but dont i need to have some experience, at least some sort of training???

tyres, i got a set of worn yoky advans on twinspark 14s and shes on 156 16s for the road.

thought id post in the tech section cause i have a load of questions. firstly, 75 brakes, wtf.... would good fluid, lines and pads do the trick for now, cause the pedal almost hits the floor and i think she would stop faster if i opened the door and dragged my feet on the ground....

and about classes, shes on konis at the back so thats ok in the standard class, but what about r spec tyres, if i use them, wont it mean i have to go to the modified class?

hey guys,

as of 2 pm yesterday, I am free from year 12 and school. now I can finally get stuck into this alfa project. To put it simply, im a complete noob when it comes to motorsport. My background is in sailing and yacht racing. Ive worked at a go kart track for 2 years and have met some people here and there but i have virtually no experience.

I bought a 75 3.0 potenziata a few months back and it has been living unroadworthy and regoed in my backyard under a cover. I intend to modify it and do aroca sprints and other track work in it.

Im after some advice, besides a roadworthy, where should i start  Huh

4  Technical / 160 Series (90, 75, 164 Sedans) / Re: Which 75 to buy. on: August 14, 2008, 07:37:31 PM
hey mick,

a friend of mine has a TS and I think as a daily, it does a much better job then the v6. personally i havnt driven any 2.5s but from what i can gather, it will cost more when things go wrong and will use more fuel. the 2.5 gives you around the same performance for more fuel. The LSD would sell it for me, there is nothing worse then putting your foot down and spinning the inside wheel like i do in my volvo Angry.

i just bought a 3.0L for the weekend but if i were to replace my daily volvo, the TS would win. its more balanced compared to the v6 as well.

dont worry about the noise factor, i think the TS sounds great anyways!

i've seen some nice ones around lately, there is one in adelaide on car sales that looks good, but he wants a lot for it. you can snap up a good one really cheap if you dont mind a few scratches here and there

good luck! Grin

hey guys,

wondering if anyone can help me identify my spare transaxle. At first i thought it wasnt an lsd cause if i turned one wheel, the other went in the opposite direction. It turns out it is.  Cheesy

the potenziata had a 3.5 or 3.7 diff ratio i believe. I think the spare is a 4.1:1 diff out of a normal 3.0L.

the crown wheel has 41 teeth and has 11 41 bib on the side. that has to be a 4.1 doesnt it???

the id is: 4061 004243 903091 S25

Does anyone know what gear and diff ratios i would need for a 3.0l track transaxle?

cheers.

Hey guys,

I dont understand the whole LSD thing properly and was wondering if someone could explain it to me. I've just got my Ps and have been racing go karts for the past 2 years so i havnt really needed to worry about diffs.

I know how an open diff works and I understand the purpose of the LSD and why you need one over an open diff, basically to get power down out of corners or you'll end up spinning the inside wheel at 100% and going nowhere fast (as well as revving the pants off your poor old volvo 360 Undecided)

Doesnt an LSD lock the wheels together in a certain % ratio using clutches? So for instance the LSD in a 3.0 potenziata is 25% (so im told) so if one wheel is spinning at 100 km/h the other is spinning @ 25km/h?
Am I sort of on the right track Huh Can someone explain the percentage thing??? Why do people put 50% LSDs in for comp use???

So the twinnie and 2.5 had 4.11's and the 3.0L has 3.53, didnt the 3.0L qv potenziata have different again, like 3.73, or 3.93 or something??

Why is the 3.0L unsuitable for comp use? Is it because you cant go as fast in each gear compared to the TS and 2.5? from what i can remember, the TS does 80 km/h in first i think, havnt driven one for a while! So wouldnt the 3.0L ratio be suitable for slower twisty tracks?

Over the next year, I want to slowly build a 3.0L potenziata track car and many people have said go the TS. Is it the diff thing or is there more to it?

cheers

Hey guys,

im 90% sure its a potenziata. It has the clover badges on the back and they are on the left side.

The paper work says its built sept 1990 which from what i can tell, it has to be a potenziata.

I know about the motronic but is there any obvious way to tell from the engine bay, is it written somewhere?

cheers

I am looking at one already and just after some info.

It was part of the melbourne car club for some time then moved to SA about 2 years ago. I have a mate who is an alfa mechanic and he had a look at it today. It needs some work done for RWC but im mostly worried about the engine. It has done 199,000 kms and has a service history but its spitting out a lot of unburnt fuel and under load it is blowing quite a bit of oil smoke. My friend has an alfetta with potenziata engine and running gear and he reckons its not producing anywhere near the power that it should be. Would it just be an engine tune to eliminate the unburnt fuel thing or is it something more serious like replacing rings to cure oil smoke??? I have intentions of turning it into a track/club car in a year or so once i finish school (im 18) and have a bit of time on my hands.

Does anybody know the car? Its old melbourne reg was EWT 210 and im told it has won a few events in the vic car club and was also featured on the cover of unique cars a few years back. This is the second owner.

Its chassis number is ZAR 162 0000 6222010 (got from rego sticker) which makes it a 1990 potenziata from the info i have. It is black and has 16 inch 156 wheels.

Hey brent and phil,

thanks for the info. Ive just about been talked out of the 3.0 by heaps of people but every time I hear one I find myself getting sucked back. There's one for sale in adelaide, a '91 potenziata but it doesnt have the original gearbox in it which needs a rebuild so i think that counts that one out cause i dont have the time. Its got some random non-alfa box at the moment. I think the twinsparks the way to go. Are there any good ones for sale in victoria that you guys know of?? I'm having trouble finding any decent 75s on the net. Are there any comon probs with the twinspark apart from the sensors and what should I look for when buying one?? It would be great brent if you could email me the details of the 3.0 in brisbane to ross_kerby@hotmail.com.  If a good 3.0 comes up i may just have to get it... though is it true the 3.0 costs twice as much than the twinspark to repair if something big goes wrong??? Anyway you guys have a great xmas and i'll let you know what i finally get.  i appriciate your help

cheers.

Hey,

my names Dean Burrows and I'm a 17 year old skool boy with a passion for cars. I work at a go kart centre and have spent the last few months looking for my first car, hopefully an alfa 75. I want to join the club once I have a car but the problem is getting one. I've been looking for a 75 3.0 v6 but there are none in victoria. I've been told by heaps of people who have 75s or did have them that repairs and parts are really expensive but that wont put me off. More shifts at the go karts I think... Anyways, I just posted a wanted message in the buy/swap/sell section looking for any 3.0 v6 75s for sale also any twinsparks. Hopefully one will pop up. Until then, I just wanted to say hi and to find out more about the 75.

cheers. Grin

hey guys

I'm 17 and about to get my license. I've been looking for my first car for a while. Rest assured I'm not some fully sic obsessed with american muscle and straight line speed, I want a drivers car. My eyes have been fixed on the alfa 75 for a few months now but I cant find one. I'm looking for a reasonably good 3.0 V6 but none have come up at all in victoria, I've looked everywhere. I know of one for sale in Adelaide but it needs its gearbox rebuilt. If anyone is looking to sell their alfa 75 3.0 v6 please let me know. A friend of mine has a 2.0 twinspark which is what got me interested in the 75 so if anyone wants to sell a twinspark I'm also interested. Once I get a car I can join the club.

cheers  Grin
