PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Aug. 17, 2008) – A 1938 Alfa Romeo owned by Jon and Mary Shirley of Medina, Wash., was named “Best of Show” at the 58th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance held Sunday along the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links®. Proceeds from raffles, auctions, sponsorships and gate receipts helped contribute more than $1.3 million to charity for the third consecutive year. Jon Shirley, the former president and chief operating officer of Microsoft who resides in Medina, Wash., purchased his 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta four years ago. The 8C 2900B was Alfa Romeo’s most prestigious grand touring car of the 1930s. Only 33 examples were ever completed for road use, and most were bodied by Carrozzeria Touring. The body on this car is unique; one of six privately commissioned Berlinettas, it was used in several advertisements by Alfa. “This car has an intriguing history,” says Shirley. “It won the first race at Watkins Glen in 1948, and though the car’s been driven quite a bit, it’s never been wrecked. I’ve always been an Alfa fan, so winning at Pebble Beach just doesn’t get much better. I can’t wait to take it back on the road real soon.” Competitors from 27 states and 12 countries brought their prized automotive possessions to California’s Monterey Peninsula for judging in 24 classes. www.Pebblebeachconcours.net

Hey Forum-philes, I'm looking for numbers for our EMR on Sunday 31st August. Starting from Mc Donalds Rowville Melway Ref 72 J12 at 9.30 am, we will be running up and around through the Dandenongs with a free coffee stop at 'Skyhigh' at Mt Dandenong. Then on to Eureka Skydeck 88. Lunch will be available at the Belgian Beer Cafe before a Sky walk up on the 88th floor. I really need an indication of your intentions, so I can book the Cafe. 1) How many want to just do the drive around Mt Dandenong 2) How many want to then come to the city for a beer at the Cafe 3) How many staying for lunch. Please call me with your intentions and Alfa Romeo model. 0417-365929 Gary.

Here we go again. The good news for you is now the car has got shaky Service History (and I wouldn't rate Ultra Tune as proper Service) that you can now offer 'thousands less' for the car. If the current owner thinks he can save money with dodgey service, he now has to pay the penalty at sell time. The only people I would have look over the car for you at pre-purchase would be an Alfa Romeo Dealer. That way your GF can have some security against things that might crop up. It would also be then worth her while to begin a service relationship with that Dealer, so she can enjoy many many years of safe reliable motoring. How would you feel about calling out your Wholesaler mate on a dark wet night if she has some trouble with the car?

Part two to this is real easy to fix. Fuel gauge and warning light acuracy. 1) Just unscrew the tank unit from the top of the tank in the boot. 6 screws. You might need to disconnect the fuel pipe and the two wires before lifting out the tank unit. 5 mins. so far. 2) Now connect up the two wires again, also connect a tempoary earth wire between the (now removed) tank unit and a suitable clean earth connection. (maybe the boot latch) 3) Turn the key on. 4) While holding the tank unit in your hand, you can watch the dash gauge through the back window, you can move the float leven through it's travel and see the appropriate movement on your dash gauge. A bit easier to do with two people, but I like to do it myself so I can see exactly where it is reading. 10 mins now. 5) Stick a measuring stick in the tank through the fuel gauge hole and measure the level of fuel remaining. Draw a conclusion on how much fuel you have (say 1/2 tank) 6) Measure the travel of the float on the gauge unit, noting when the light comes on. 7) Vevy gently bend the wire arm holding the float to match what fuel level you have, and where you would like the fuel light to come on. 15 minuites all up. A couple of trials are usually required to get what you desire, but I haven't had much trouble geting an accurate gauge this way, with a light that comes on at about 8-10 litres to go. Some care issues. Make sure your fuel tank is securely earthed to the body with clean shiney screws or you will get voltage drop and the gauge will be inaccurate. Make sure the plastic float is air tight. (shake it, or push it in a glass of water to see if any bubbles can be squeezed out) There is no safety risk in doing this opperation providing you are doing it on a cool day. It is pretty hard to ignight fuel with a spark, as it is FUEL VAPOUR that is dangerous, but just be causious with ventilation and securing earth connections befor turning on the key. All up 30 minuites and you should have a more accurate 105 fuel reading.

Yes sorry Adrian. I can't find that article, I was sure it was in Cross & Serpent a few years back. Here is what I did initially to fix the problem in my Giulia Sprint GT. I used a simple dash light globe (about a 4 or 6 watt 12v globe) and soldered two wires onto the globe to afix across the tank unit wire on the back of the instrument. It took a bit of experimentation with different wattage globes. With the next car I went to a techno-wiz (Jaycar I think) to give me a resistor to match what I wanted. It is too hard now for me to pull the gauges out of my race car due to the cage so I can't help you much more than that right now.

Dan, there is not any real colour code for the wheel colour silver. I needed to do a bit of experimentation before I came up with a colour that pretty much happens to match the shade used on most current mag wheels. A sort of brushed silver shade two pack with a heavy clear coat over the top. Your welcome to check mine sometime if you wish. As for tyres if you want to stay traditional you can't beat Michelin ZX or even XAS, but more modern Yokohama 352, dunlops or Pirelli P600 are good too.

General Category / General Discussion / Re: underbody sandblasting and repainting

Sandblasting (garnet) under the floor is fine, but take care never to use garnet on surface top panels as the process can stretch and distort panels. Often there are grade choices of sandblasting, plastic bead blasting is also popular. I think the soda blasting is the new big thing. Chemically removing or mechanically removing the underbody treatment is also another way to go. Originally a soft sound deadening rubber based paint was used in selected areas and then painted over with the top coat. If you happen to be at Winton this week-end feel free to make yourself known and have a look at my car, or alternatively at other club days. I hope you might consider coming on my EMR on Sunday 31st in the Dandenongs.
