1  Technical / 160 Series (90, 75, 164 Sedans) / Re: Did all Alfa 75's come with LSD? on: May 04, 2008, 09:27:25 PM
From what I've read, it's not that easy to tell.  Because of the way Alfa LSD's are, the require load before they start to limit slip.  This is of course different to locked diffs where both wheels turn 1:1 in the same direction all the time.  The 25% quoted is where 25% of available torque is transferred to the slipping wheel.  Have a look at: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/milano-75-1987-1989/51915-how-identify-lsd-limited-slip-differential-2.html for another discussion on this and a bit of to-ing and fro-ing.

I think people are probably saying don't turn a Potenziata into a track car, well, because it's a Potenziata! They are reasonably rare. The diff thing might come into it as well because the taller diff ratio in the 3.0 isn't as good for acceleration as the 4.1:1 in the 2.5/TS.

The Motronic cars have a toothed wheel on the crank pulley as well don't they?

If you can post the engine number, or at least the prefix that will confirm it.  If it starts with AR*01911*......   it's a 2.5.

3  Technical / 116 Series (Alfetta Sedan/GT/GTV & Giulietta Sedan) / Re: new battery for GTV6 on: April 01, 2008, 08:20:50 PM
Century makes 2 ranges of batteries, High Peformance and Ultra HighPerf or something like that.  So they could both be the 'right' battery but one has a higher CCA rating and a battery condition indicator. They're about $20-30 more expensive if I remember right.

I can't really add anything about the GTV6s but the fuel consumption for my 75(same motor) is similar to what is posted above.  Gets 12-14 L/100km around town and the other weekend going to Phillip Island (I think I saw your car too!) got down to about 9.5.

GTV6s are 116 series cars, and 75s and 90s are classified as 160.  This is despite there being more similarities between a 75 and a GTV6 compared to a GTV6 and a Giulietta which is a also a 116. It's probably easier to refer to them all as transaxles because most of the mechanical parts are interchangeable.

As a P plater, I found Just Car Insurance best. They're more understanding with modifications as well.

Hi Ben.  I really wouldn't remove the bonnet if you don't have to.  Folding it right back is just as good as removing it access wise and when you're done there's no dramas trying to get the gap even all the way around.

Hey Beeno.  Cool 90! Cool  The #6 plug is tricky, when I do it I drop the sockets into the hole one by one and use 2 short extensions if I remember correctly.  Just push them together in the hole to click them together and do it in reverse to get them out.

Getting the motor out, after you disconnect the loom, hoses, tailshaft etc and removed the radiator. If the 90 has the fold back bonnet like the 75 do that and put the rear of the car on jack stands.  Then start lifting and find someone to lie under the car to steer the extension housing out through the tunnel.

7  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Do you double-declutch, or just heel-toe on the race track? on: November 24, 2007, 12:37:11 AM
regarding the speed of the input shaft, Is this why transaxle synchros always go so quickly, because it's got all the momentum of the driveshaft to speed up/slow down?  I've asked a couple of people with Porsche 944s (they're also rear transaxle aren't they?) and they've never had probs with synchros.

This is why I think a rear clutch is better.  When the clutch is disengaged for changing gears, the synchros only have to speed/slow down the clutch, but with a front mounted clutch(like the 924/944 etc I think) the synchros have to speed up/slow down the entire driveshaft and the clutch.  Still doesn't explain why the Alfa synchros wear out Huh

Looks great Shane. Would this car have had the 5 spoke 2/3 piece Zender wheels originally as well?

There's a tiny photo of the Playboy GTV6 on p.38 of Alfas down under Pt2 and there's a bit of a thread on it here:  http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/alfetta-gtv6-1975-1986/21204-playboy-gtv6.html

Hopefully we'll see it at the Spettacolo on Sunday.

Yeah my 75 V6 ticks as well.  I had the exhaust cams re-ground and the followers re-faced which made it a lot better, but still ticks a little.  It's a lot more noticeable because I don't have the under-bonnet insulation.  The cam re-grind cost about $130 including the 6 followers.  It could be tappet clearances as well.

Yes! and still keen to get rid of stuff.  I've sold a few bits but I've still got most of what I advertised in the first post.  What are you after??

11  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Forum Reorg - what do you think? on: October 20, 2007, 06:29:37 PM
I think the technical forums would best be arranged like this:

 - 105/115 Series (Coupe/Spider/Berlina)
 - Transaxles (Alfetta Sedan/GT/GTV/GTV6, & Giulietta, 90, 75)
 - 900 Series (Alfasud, Alfasud Sprint, 33)
 - Current Models (GTV, Spider, 164, 147, 156, 159, 166)
 - Other (pre-105, specials)

Apart from that, great work.  Thanks for keeping the forum going.

I found a donut chunk sitting on the transaxle crossmember when it was out.  I think I'll check mine tomorrow just in case.

Welcome to the club!  Nice choice with the 75 too!  I've had mine for about a year now and it's been really reliable,  Dad helped me build 2 cars into 1 because the first one had some rust we didn't know about.  The motor is still unopened, we just put new seals in it.  As far as the electrics go, I think the 'stories' are way over reported.  Most 75's are getting on for 20 years old though so they're not without fault.  The motors need care, expecially the V6 with it's timing belt.  I do my own work (sometimes with a little help Wink) and as a first year apprentice I find it very affordable.  I saw in another post you were looking for some pictures of the engine bay and the interior.  Here's some pictures of mine.  The interior shows the original tweed material on the door cards and the original seats retrimmed in different material by the previous owner.  The tweed material came in the earlier cars on the seats as well but usually disintegrates.

Cheers, Scott

Yeah I still do.  Turned out it had heaps of rust under the bodykit, so now I'm wrecking it.  The rust was so bad in 2 spots you could stuff a tennis ball in the sill Shocked.  I bought the white one from Sydney and Dad and I built two cars into one.

Yeah heaps of fun for only 4-5 minutes of 'action'.  Looking forward to the next one.  I liked the first spreadsheet better.... although I knew 4th couldn't be right Grin

Thanks to the organisers and volunteers
